[ELECTRIC HONEY]

Celebrity Spotlight Special- Luscious Jackson
Instore Meet and Greet

On Tuesday, June 29th, Luscious Jackson did a special instore performance and signing at the Virgin Megastore on Union Square and 14th street, just outside NYU territory. The instore was to promote their new CD, "Electric Honey", which was released on that same day.

Arriving at around 6-15ish for the 8pm event with my friend Patricia, we quickly each grabbed a copy of the CD and headed for the cash register. Some of the best stuff was all the promotional bonus items you received for the purchase. With the CD, you were given a poster and a special mock-VIP laminate, with a strap to hang it over your neck. This is probably the most awesome promo item I had ever seen; it was a picture of the CD cover, with all the instore appearance information. In put it on immediately, and we headed down the escalators to the stage area. Not surprisingly, I saw the infamous Jim a few moments later. (He's there for nearly every concert and special event I, April, frank and Tracy go to. He informed me he had seen LJ about 14 times. Awesome.

So we had front row, but then the predictable thing where the Virgin Megastore employees kicked us out of the stage area happened. It was now a battle to see if we could stay at the front of whatever line was created. Ultimately, we did get to be in the front row, in basically the same place everyone was in before. Of course ;) it didn't have to take a whole bunch of confusion and frustration, but it wouldn't be fun without the usual concert harassment by the people in charge.

As for the actual concert itself, that was quite a joy. Every instrument sounded great, Jill Cunnif, Gabby Glaser and Kate Schellenbach were all in a good mood, as were their other band members. Got to note that their guitarist / bongo / 2nd drummer they have playing with them was incredibly cute. =) (sorry, but she was! =-) Didn't catch her name though- doh! When she and Kate played the drums and bongos together, the dual percussives created fierce sonic atmospheres and rhythms.

The band played 8 songs- half from the new album and the other half from a mix of their previous albums. From "Electric Honey" we heard "Nervous Breakthrough", "Fantastic Fabulous", "Summer Daze" and their single, "Ladyfingers". "Naked Eye" and "Electric" were played from their previous LP, "Fever In, Fever Out".

Finally it came time for the signing. Jill, Gabby and Kate came out no cute girl =( - and a after a decent wait (there wasn't an altogether too long line), I got to talk to them for about a minute. Gabby was very nice to me , even though she of course didn't know me. We were basically "hey and what's up"-ing. But I mentioned I liked the way Kate's percussive sounded, and congratulations on Jill's recent marriage. Kate responded- "yeah, getting married to -I'm marrying myself" . So I got "Electric Honey" personalized, as well as FIFO, and the poster. Got a couple pics too, overall a very quick but nice meeting. There was a nice, overall happy atmosphere and it was a good time
